David Bowie: A legend that was

The world of music is still mourning the loss of a legend, David Bowie. The British singer, songwriter, producer and actor passed away fighting terminal liver cancer at the age of 69. There have been messages flooded with tributes from millions, to their music idol for many years. There are many who grew up listening to his songs, and then, there are more who continue to be inspired by his music.

Born in south London in 1947,Bowie’sfirst biggest claim to fame was the 1969 single,‘Space Oddity’. He also gained repute as a rock star through his on-stage persona of ‘Ziggy Stardust’, famous for his wild costumes, sounds and a flamboyant lifestyle.

His last album was released only recently, on his birthday on January 08. The album “Blackstar,” in collaboration with a jazz quartet, was typically enigmatic and exploratory, and will be a treat for millions of his fans.

His fame bought him into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.He will also be honored with a concert at Carnegie Hall on March 31 featuring the Roots, Cyndi Lauper and the Mountain Goats.

Talking about his characteristic, Bowie’ssongs reflected his persona. He wrote songs, which reflected the sentiment of an outsider: an alien, a misfit, a sexual adventurer, a faraway astronaut. His specialization was blending different music genres like rock, cabaret, and jazz. His music themes also included inspiration from real life drama, which translated into pop hits like “Let’s Dance.”

Bowie gained admiration from the entire music industry, which includes earned admiration and emulation across the musical spectrum — from rockers, balladeers, punks, hip-hop acts, creators of pop spectacles and even classical composers like Philip Glass, who based two symphonies on Bowie’s albums “Low” and “Heroes.”
