7 Composers You Didn’t Know Featured in Game of Thrones
For all ye fellow brethren out there who gasp every time the loveliness that is the Game of Thrones‘ Main Theme plays (for music and the cool Da Vinci prototype machine graphics alike) we did some snooping around to track down all the well-known composers who have been part of the Game of Thrones bandwagon. While all the original music has been composed by Ramin Djawadi, there are plenty many compositions by eminent composers appropriated from different people. After all, this season’s raring to go and has its teeth sunk in with three episodes out already! Here’s commemorating some of the great composers that make this show such an aural treat.
“Game Of Thrones” – Main Title by Ramin Djawadi
Yes, that very song which with the crest and troughs of its soundwaves, takes you through the highs and lows of the different Houses, and the Westeros topography displayed through its brilliant animation. Hand and glove as they say! It is on every regular watcher’s lips as it is for some of the actors as well. Watch the Stark kids a cappella their version of the theme here.

“Goodbye Brother” – Ramin Dwajadi
The song instantaneously takes you to the lofty heights of the desolate white wall, lonely in its eerie glory. Featuring in Season 2 Episode 8, “The Prince of Winterfell” Jon Snow is handed over to the Lord of Bones for questioning at this point, while at the same time Robb Stark is betrayed. Clearly, lonely is the head that wears the crown.

“The Rains of Castamere” – Ramin Dwajadi and Tad Gubler, Sigur Ros
This song is a word for impending doom in the series, never boding anyone well. It appeared in the ninth episode of Season 3, Blackwater, an episode before *SPOILERS AHEAD* The Red Wedding massacre where the Stark family was all but destroyed, and it appeared before King Goffrey’s death, a cover version played by Sigur Ros, the Icelandic band that actually featured in the show while playing the song.

“Essex” – Martin Phipps
Martin Phipps has been an established producer for a very long time to major productions such as BBC’s Oliver Twist and this theme was originally used for Elizabeth- I, The Virgin Queen. With its complex yet beautiful arrangement it befits all the virginal feisty future queens of this show. (No spoilers here, I’m guessing, like so many of you non-book educated fans).

“Starvation” – Thomas Bergersen
This song featured on Dr. Who as well as Star Trek: Secrets of the Universe. Norwegian composer Thomas Bergerson’s album Illusions has featured several times on the show, and remains an absolutely dark, muted number, with bare minimum Middle-East influenced vocals till it builds up with heavy orchestration to a war cry. Winter is coming, indeed.

“Bismi Şah Orijinal Dizi Müzikleri” – Fahir Atakoglu
Turkish composer Fahir Atakoglu’s marching chant fits in perfectly with Khaleesi’s victory march. Incidentally this song also featured in Turkish prime time period drama Muhtesem, and brings in the oriental element in it’s low rumbling cries.

Cleopatra Seduces Caesar – Jeff Beal
Official theme song of the television series Rome, it has been composed by revered composer Jeff Beal, known for composing the theme for the latest blockbuster series House of Cards. Listen here.
So it turns out, some of the cast has a musical side to themselves as well. There is no-less-than a professional DJ among the cast (check out the photograph below) and, yes, it is none other than Hodor. It turns out he is not just good with carrying kids, but can spin a tune around as well. Also, before we leave you, apparently Lily Allen and Theon Greyjoy are siblings. She has written embarrassing songs as proof of that. Check below:
