Weekend Collection Volume 3

After grooving to our Weekend Collections Volume 1 and Volume 2, here’s the third one to get you all hop-skip and jumpy to these paradise-to-the-ears tracks from all over the music spectrum. (Music moves us all differently, as a famous saying should have gone.)

Hard Out There by Lily Allen

You had us Lily, right from the moment you went – You’ll find me in the studio, when not in the kitchen/ Don’t need to shake my ass for you coz I got a brain. Then you go on parodying the current pop culture sexist fraternity out there, while killing it with the beats and the lyrics. We couldn’t love you anymore. Yes, we have found us ourselves a new karaoke song right there.

Cough Syrup by Young The Giant

A song from existential yonder, we went back to it while watching re-runs of Glee and were kicked at re-discovering it ( Blaine sings it to Kurt on Episode 14, Season three for the trivia hungry). Suffice it to say the song is a world in itself, right from the guitar harmony at the beginning. Life’s too short to care at all maybe, but atleast you have good music to tide you by. Watch the video reveal itself with slow synchronisation as the song bewitches you into a calmer state of existence. (Perfect for shutting out rush-hour traffic sounds.)

Dandelion Wine by Gregory Alan Isakov

This song is as exotic as its name sounds. Written by a contemporary Llewyn Davis of the great American folk and blues, the song is aspirational Dylan with a little bit of Bruce Springsteen and Paul Simon thrown in for good measure. Gregory is one of the few musicians to have sites dedicated to the meaning of his lyrics, in a world of diminishing lyric value. A song we would like to come home to for a while now. Enough said.

Cops! By Scribe

We rediscovered this song on a dead day, waking up to memories of mosh pits, thundering grounds, and a rush through our veins. A heady drip of horrifying pleasure as the drama of the distorted guitar and dark lyrics get to you. Get a good pair of headphones, crank up the volume for this one, and sit back as you see the day transformed.

A-Punk by Vampire Weekend

So feel like a kid again, says the organ breeze. A-Punk is all about winter sunshine and frisbees to a shifting bassline. A traditional build-up is accompanied with lyrics that go – His Honour drove southwards seeking exotica…Cut his teeth on turquoise harmonicas, for we’re in the age of irony, people. The video is as much fun as the song, as the band members are robot-ified into a speeded up stop-motion of them performing, and even while it’s comical, they never miss a beat. Ay Ay Ay!

Hilltop by Sky Rabbit

Hilltop has oomph and declares itself to the world like Indian bands seldom do. Raxit Tewari oozes with confidence as he mouths out the whirlwind of words as the music unleashes into controlled chaos. Our favourite new tracks of the year.
