Mattel Unveils Special Edition ‘Diwali Barbie’ in Collaboration with Anita Dongre

Mattel, the global toy manufacturer behind the iconic Barbie doll, has launched a new special edition, ‘Diwali Barbie’, ahead of the upcoming Diwali season. This festive edition is part of a collaboration with renowned Indian fashion designer Anita Dongre and aims to celebrate India’s rich cultural heritage. The collaboration underscores Mattel’s ongoing efforts to expand its offerings and resonate with diverse audiences worldwide.

The Diwali Barbie reflects the vibrant spirit of the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, which symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness. The doll’s ensemble combines elements of traditional Indian attire with modern aesthetics, making it a blend of tradition and contemporary style. The Diwali Barbie wears a striking three-piece outfit, including a floral Koti vest, a choli top, and a lehenga skirt, all inspired by India’s rich textile traditions. Dongre’s design for the doll incorporates intricate floral adornments, featuring dahlias, jasmine, and the Indian lotus, paying homage to Indian aesthetics and motifs.




Complementing the doll’s attire are sparkling earrings and gold bangles, added to capture the essence of Diwali’s luminous and joyful celebrations. According to Mattel, the accessories reflect the radiant lights that are central to the festival. The doll is designed for children aged six and above, with the packaging including a doll stand and a certificate of authenticity, making it a collector’s item as well.

Global Appeal and Cultural Representation

The Diwali Barbie, which is available on Amazon for Rs 1,995 and at U.S. retailers like Target and Walmart for $40, is aimed at both Indian and global audiences. Lalit Agarwal, country manager for Mattel India, emphasized that the doll is part of the brand’s broader strategy to highlight India’s cultural richness on a global platform. “Through the Diwali doll, we are showcasing India’s vibrant cultural heritage while celebrating the beauty of diversity,” he noted in a statement.

This initiative is part of Mattel’s continued efforts to diversify its iconic Barbie lineup. Earlier this year, the company launched its first-ever blind Barbie doll and a Black Barbie with Down syndrome, reinforcing the brand’s message of inclusivity. Mattel’s introduction of these dolls aligns with its goal to offer toys that reflect the diversity of the world and inspire young children to embrace different cultures and abilities.

A Celebration of Creativity

For Anita Dongre, this collaboration holds a special significance. The designer revealed her excitement about creating the Diwali Barbie, as she never had the chance to own one during her childhood in India. “This doll is very special to me. It’s an incredible feeling to finally design my own Barbie,” Dongre shared in an interview.

With the Diwali Barbie, Mattel continues to expand the cultural relevance of its iconic doll, maintaining Barbie’s status as a symbol of inclusivity, creativity, and empowerment. Through this collaboration with Dongre, the brand not only commemorates the festival of lights but also continues to bridge cultural gaps, making Barbie a timeless figure that speaks to children and collectors alike across the globe.
