Zydus Wins USFDA Approval for Ascorbic Acid Injection With 180-Day Generic Exclusivity
The newly approved injectable is the generic equivalent of Ascor® Injection, the reference listed drug used to treat scurvy in adult and pediatric patients aged five months and older when oral vitamin C administration is not possible, inadequate, or contraindicated.
Zydus Lifesciences has secured final USFDA approval for its generic Ascorbic Acid Injection, opening the door to a potentially lucrative U.S. market opportunity and granting the product Competitive Generic Therapy status with eligibility for 180-day exclusivity.
Zydus Lifesciences Limited has received final approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) covering Ascorbic Acid Injection USP, available in 25,000 mg/50 mL and 5,000 mg/10 mL strengths, both at 500 mg/mL.
The approval marks another expansion of Zydus’ U.S. generics portfolio as the pharmaceutical company continues to build its presence in the American market.
Zydus Gets Competitive Generic Therapy Status
The newly approved injectable is the generic equivalent of Ascor® Injection, the reference listed drug used to treat scurvy in adult and pediatric patients aged five months and older when oral vitamin C administration is not possible, inadequate, or contraindicated.
A key element of the approval is the USFDA’s designation of Zydus’ ANDA as a Competitive Generic Therapy (CGT).
Under the CGT framework, certain qualifying generic drugs can receive 180 days of exclusivity following the first commercial marketing of the product, subject to the applicable regulatory requirements and the USFDA’s determination of eligibility.
For Zydus, the designation could provide an important period of market opportunity as the company introduces the generic Ascorbic Acid Injection product in the United States.
U.S. Market Opportunity
The reference product generated approximately $11.6 million in annual U.S. sales, according to IQVIA MAT data for June 2026.
While the actual commercial opportunity for Zydus will depend on factors including pricing, competition, market penetration, and launch timing, the approval gives the company access to an established product category.
The company plans to manufacture Ascorbic Acid Injection at its USFDA-approved injectable manufacturing facility in Jarod, near Vadodara, Gujarat.
Zydus Pharmaceuticals (USA) Inc. will market the product in the United States.
Zydus Expands U.S. Approval Pipeline
The latest approval adds to Zydus’ growing list of regulatory wins in the United States.
The pharmaceutical group said it now has 448 approvals and has filed 513 ANDAs with the USFDA as of June 30, 2026.
The figures underline the company’s continued focus on developing and commercializing generic medicines for the U.S. market, one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical markets.
The Ascorbic Acid Injection approval is also significant because injectable products can present higher manufacturing and regulatory hurdles than conventional oral formulations, making regulatory clearances an important milestone for generic drugmakers.
What the Approval Means for Zydus
The combination of final USFDA approval, CGT designation and potential 180-day exclusivity gives Zydus another opportunity to strengthen its U.S. generics business.
The company has not disclosed a specific commercial launch date. The 180-day exclusivity period, where applicable, will run from the first day of commercial marketing as determined under the relevant USFDA framework.
With the product targeting a branded medicine that recorded approximately $11.6 million in annual U.S. sales, investors will be watching closely for Zydus’ launch strategy and the impact of the new approval on its North American business.
