Jermaine Jackson Ordered to Pay $6.5 Million in Sexual Assault Lawsuit After Default Judgment

Jermaine Jackson has been ordered to pay more than $6.5 million to a woman who accused him of sexual assault after the music star failed to respond to a civil lawsuit filed in California.

The ruling, issued through a default judgment, stems from allegations made by Rita Butler Barrett, who accused the former The Jackson 5 member of violently raping her in 1988. The lawsuit was originally filed in December 2023 under California’s Sexual Abuse and Cover Up Accountability Act.

Default Judgment Issued After No Court Response

According to court documents first reported by multiple U.S. entertainment outlets, Jermaine Jackson allegedly never responded to the lawsuit or formally appeared in court proceedings. As a result, the court granted a default judgment in favor of Barrett, awarding her more than $6.5 million in damages and related costs.

Barrett claimed in her complaint that Jackson unexpectedly arrived at her Encino, California, home in the spring of 1988 before allegedly assaulting her. She stated the incident left her traumatized and caused lasting emotional distress.

The judgment reportedly includes compensation tied to emotional suffering, medical expenses, and court-related costs.

Legal Team Faced Challenges Locating Jackson

Rita Butler Barrett’s legal team previously stated they struggled for months to locate Jermaine Jackson in order to formally serve him with the lawsuit. According to filings, investigators attempted to contact the singer through various known addresses and through members of his family.

Private investigator Maureen O’Connell reportedly told the court that repeated attempts were made throughout 2025 and early 2026 to locate Jackson, including visits to the Jackson family compound in Encino and outreach to relatives.

After those efforts proved unsuccessful, a judge approved an alternative service request allowing legal notices to be published in the Los Angeles Times for four consecutive weeks between August and September 2025.

Because Jackson did not respond after the notices were published, the court proceeded with the default judgment process.

Lawsuit Filed Under California Abuse Law

The lawsuit was filed under California’s Sexual Abuse and Cover Up Accountability Act, legislation that temporarily expanded the legal window for survivors of alleged sexual abuse to pursue civil claims, even in decades-old cases.

The law has led to multiple high-profile lawsuits involving celebrities and public figures across the entertainment industry in recent years.

As of now, Jackson has not publicly addressed the allegations or the court ruling. Representatives for the singer have also not issued an official statement regarding the judgment.

Jackson Family Legacy Faces Renewed Scrutiny

The legal development places renewed attention on the broader legacy surrounding the Jackson family, one of the most influential names in music history. Jermaine Jackson rose to fame alongside his brothers, including Michael Jackson, as part of The Jackson 5 during the late 1960s and 1970s.

While the allegations remain part of a civil case rather than a criminal prosecution, the financial judgment marks a major legal setback for the singer.

The case also reflects the growing impact of expanded abuse legislation, which continues to reshape how historic allegations are handled in courts across the United States.
